Dear New Grads,

It’s been fun interviewing for our internal Jr. Account Executive position. I have talked to a couple great new grads that are excited and ready to get out into the work force and set the world on fire. However, the vast majority of them have been a tad disappointing. I am so hopeful every time I start an interview; trust me, I WANT to fill this position. But there are just some things that I can’t overlook and will be deal breakers for this role. I have to believe that these things would be deal breakers for most companies, so I am writing this letter to help you out. Consider it my good deed, (okay, maybe I am venting a little) but if it can help one new grad land a job- my work here is done!

  1. Know the position– Sound obvious? It is. However, I can’t tell you how many people who I interview that can’t tell me anything about our company. Now, I am not expecting you to regurgitate our entire website, just have a general idea about what we do. I have even been in an interview and the person even went as far as to say that she wouldn’t consider a recruiting position. Uh, this is awkward….we are a recruiting firm, why are we talking?
  2. Have some passion. One of my first questions is always “Tell me about your ideal job opportunity”.  During this question, I’m not necessarily looking for you to tell me that your dream job is to be a recruiter…although, that’s awesome if it is (and call me about a position, I’m hiring)! But, I am looking for you to have some ambition, or have given some thought to what you are looking for in a job. It can be as vague as “I’m looking for a sales position within a growing company.” Or, “I’m open to any position as long as it is with a company with a strong company culture”. Heck, I’m even open to you saying what you don’t want in a company, just tell me something! I get it, I was a new grad once upon a time and I too felt that pressure to just get a job…any job, but I’m tired of the interviews where the person basically tells me that they are looking for anything and everything. This doesn’t give me a whole lot of confidence that you are someone who is going to be a long-term employee with us.
  3. Have some questions. I can’t tell you how many interviews that I have had where I turn it over for questions and all I hear is crickets. I mean, how do you not have questions about a potential career opportunity?? I want you to ask me about the culture, the traits of a successful recruiter, what a typical day looks like, etc. I want to know that you are really considering this job as a career. Also, while we are on the subject of questions- please don’t let the salary and the work hours be the only questions that you ask. It is definitely a turn-off.

Hopefully, this will help you nail that next phone interview! Again, you have to remember that when someone is interviewing you- 9 times out of 10, they REALLY want this interview to go well. They will give you the benefit of the doubt most of the time, you just need to come across as ambitious and likeable…don’t be afraid to show us your personalities.
